Do you choose wine based on the label?
2,000 wine drinkers were surveyed, so a decent sized sample, and asked to pick a white and a red, with no information other than what's on the bottle. (This is critical, because price, surely, is the most common way of picking a wine.)
So which would you take? Here's the reds:
And the whites:
The second option, with the more colourful labels, won for both whites and reds. 82% of respondents also said they made their decision based solely on the label (no consideration of country, shape of bottle, or grape variety).
It made me wonder whether that would be the case here in the UK. Our experience is that relatively few people go for the loudest labels here. Perhaps we're so conditioned by more conservative (especially French) labels being commonplace?
